KGX1 Google London HQ

Location
London

Nestled in the heart of London's King's Cross regeneration zone, KGX1 is set to become one of the capital's most distinctive architectural landmarks. Often referred to as the "landscraper," this vast horizontal skyscraper stretches over 330 metres in length - matching the height of The Shard - and will accommodate up to 4,500 Google employees when fully operational. Once complete, it will be Google's first purpose-built headquarters outside of the United States and a symbol of the company's long-term commitment to the UK.

Designed by Heatherwick Studio and Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) in collaboration with BDP and structural engineers AKT II, the building combines cutting-edge sustainability with human-centred design. Inside, employees will benefit from state-of-the-art amenities including a 25-metre swimming pool, a rooftop garden and running track, wellness facilities, a multi-use sports hall, and a natural materials palette that emphasises warmth and wellbeing. KGX1 embodies a new approach to the workplace, one that integrates productivity, sustainability, and user experience under one expansive roof.

From the outset, BIM Technologies has played a critical role in supporting the digital delivery of this ambitious project. Engaged from RIBA Stage 3, BIM Technologies has worked closely with the wider design team to translate Google's global digital standards into outputs tailored to the UK's regulatory, construction, and operational environment. This involved helping to define and develop structured information requirements and coordinating the production of accurate, high-quality BIM outputs to support design development, construction planning, and long-term asset management.

Throughout the project, BIM Technologies has acted as a strategic digital consultant—collaborating not only with the architectural and engineering teams but also with the main contractor and extended supply chain. Their expertise in information management has ensured that Google's data requirements are consistently met, from federated model coordination to asset data capture and COBie compliance. Their ongoing role includes auditing deliverables, streamlining workflows, and embedding digital practices that will enable smooth handover and efficient long-term operation of the building.

KGX1 is targeting exemplary environmental performance, with ambitions to achieve BREEAM 'Outstanding' and LEED 'Platinum' ratings. These aspirations place considerable demands on the project's digital processes- requiring precise, verifiable data at every stage. BIM Technologies has supported the development of these sustainability goals by enabling rigorous data capture and providing quality assurance checks that align with high-performance design and construction methods.

The scale and complexity of KGX1 make it one of the most advanced BIM-enabled projects in the UK. With a structure that bridges multiple technical disciplines and a brief that calls for exceptional attention to detail, the digital thread that runs through this building has been essential. BIM Technologies' involvement has helped to ensure that the information underpinning the project is consistent, intelligent and interoperable for the full lifecycle of the building.

As the development moves toward completion, BIM Technologies continues to provide strategic input, ensuring that Google's vision is realised as well as future-proofed. This is a building that represents the future of work- digitally driven, environmentally responsible and entirely user-focused. With KGX1, Google and its project partners are setting a new standard for workplace design in the UK, and BIM Technologies is pleased to have contributed to delivering that vision.
