We caught up with Stephen and Walid to ask a few questions and find out how their first couple of weeks have gone.
I have been in industry 20 years with the last 10 years being focused on BIM & Digital Construction. My background discipline is Civil & Structural Engineering, and the early part of my career was predominantly based in a design consultancy. In 2019 I moved from the design consultancy discipline to a main contractor to help implement digital processes and technologies through the pre-construction & construction phases of projects. Having experience in both the design and construction phases has given me a vast understanding of how the BIM models authored during design can then be utilised throughout construction to help further de-risk and add value to projects.
It’s always tricky starting somewhere new, learning all the systems and workflows etc. but I have been made to feel welcome and supported by both the BIM.Technologies team and wider Space Group. One of the main things which have stood out in BIM.Technologies is the Directors are still ‘on the tools’ and deliver projects like everyone else. There doesn’t seem to be a hierarchy with regards to who does what work. Also, the Twinview platform blew my mind, I’m really looking forward to learning more about Twinview and getting the opportunity to implement it within a project.
The projects!! BIM.Technologies is working on really exciting projects and I’m looking forward to being involved with them.
Keep open minded about change. Digital tech, software & processes develop and evolve extremely quickly so having willingness and openness to change is important.
Originally from Syria. I grew up in Saudi Arabia and studied architecture in Jordan. I am a registered architect in Jordan and Saudi Arabia and hold two master's degrees in Sustainable Architecture and Building information modelling. I worked as an architect in Saudi, where I worked as part of a team designing and constructing residential buildings. Through my working experience, I have been exposed to BIM and decided to pursue it as a career path. Before joining BIM Technologies, I worked as a BIM consultant/in house BIM manager for several architecture practices in London.
My first weeks working at BIM technologies were very exciting. I am working alongside the team on interesting projects. The friendly team spirit at BIM technologies is unparalleled. The work has challenged me to think outside the box and reconsider my approach to BIM.
The information management side is my favourite aspect of my role. Taking data and turning it into insightful information is something I can see myself doing and getting into the deep end. The insights produced from intelligently managing and analysing the data is beneficial for the client, the design team and us as BIM consultants. This has become the norm for me now!
Since working in BIM means exposure to all project disciplines, from early design stages to operation phases going through construction, I would say knowledge about building design and construction is essential, as well as understanding the BIM requirements and standards. A strong grasp of BIM software, their capabilities and limitations are very useful, as well as the ability to think outside the box.
